GMail Does Not Recognise Dots (.)

I think we have been using gmail since years.
I found a new feature in gmail that it does not recognise dots

For example if ur username is

myname@gmail.com

we can use all the below usernames
m.yname@gmail.com
m.y.name@gmail.com
m.y.n.ame@gmail.com
m.y.n.a.me@gmail.com
m.y.n.a.m.e@gmail.com

and also u can give many dots like

m....yname@gmail.com

u can log into ur gmail account with usernames having any number of dots with same password of yours
